Mysore, Aug. 20 (KCU&KK)- Thousands of college students took out a bike rally in city today organised by Mysore Against Corruption (MAC) in support of the anti-corruption movement launched by social activist Anna Hazare in New Delhi.
Founder of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement Dr. R. Balasubramaniam launched the rally riding pillion on one of the bikes. The rally took off from Scouts and Guide Grounds near DC's office and covered about 32 km passing through Jayalakshmipuram, Kuvempunagar, Krishnamurthypuram, Agrahara, T. Narasipur Road, Nazarbad and culminating at Gandhi Square.
About 1000 bikers commenced the rally which was later joined by thousands of students from various colleges located enroute the traversed path. Several students wore Gandhi caps and held placards seeking end of corruption and hailing Anna Hazare. A few girl riders wore black dresses symbolising the dark days of the corrupt governance today.
Handbills: Handbills containing the salient features of the draft Jan Lokpal Bill and the ills of the proposed Centre's Lokpal Bill were distributed to people en route the rally. Dr. Balasubramaniam, speaking to the press, said that the people should become aware of the Anna's movement against corruption which will be shortly taken to the rural areas too.
Flippant-side: Some intellectual observers pointed out that most of the riders of the bikes were not wearing helmets while a few vehicles had three riders and a few without driving licence.
Also heard from staff of a few colleges was that most of the students deliberately absented from classes creating problem for studious students. The passers-by added that roping in students would obviously add the requisite number and indirectly helping the students to skip classes.
Students, members of Mysore Auto Consultants Association and activists of PH Association gathered at Gandhi Square today, expressing support to the hunger strike by Anna Hazare, which has entered fifth day today.
More than 1,500 primary and high school students of Nataraja School, took out a procession, gathered at Gandhi Square and expressed support to the anti-corruption movement by activists of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement.
Around 150 members of Auto Consultants Association shouted slogans 'Anna Bhai Jinjabad' to express their support.
